Have you tried opening your iPhoto 8 library with the new Photos app? Just drag the library onto the Photo icon in the Dock. It should be converted over to the new format for use with Photos.Since you never had iPhoto 9 you may be able to still use iPhoto with Yosemite by purchasing an iLife 11 disk from a 3rd party retailer and install iPhoto 9.1 (be sure to use a custom install and install iPhoto only).
